Week 13 - The infamous OFBHL "Curse of First" strikes again

Previous Story - Next Story
What an outstanding week of OFBHL playoff action! Games were almost all extremely close and well played, we saw a few more penalties than usual but most were the result of good but not dirty play. Down to the final week of the Fall 2019 season, good luck to the 8 teams still standing in their quest for the Bubbas!

Ageless wonder and team namesake Gould is Go(u)lden scoring the momentum shifting marker

Down 4-3 with under 5 minutes to play, Goulden Years' rookie Élise Berthiaume and captain clutch Brock Murray set up 73-year-old rearguard Jack Gould at the point and his seeing-eye shot found the back of the net, tying the game. Riding that high, the #5 seed scored again with 2:53 left on a nice tally by veteran playmaker Don Prior. And Don would cap off his hat-trick with just over 1 minute left, followed by Brock picking up his 4th point of the game with an empty-netter....making the final score 7-4 (en) for the Goulden ones over #4 seed Les Incompetents.

Seasoned blueliner Chris Stott had 1g-2a and captain Michel Blondeau had 1g-1a in the loss.

Curse of First strikes SC in OT thriller

The #1 seed Shooter Club and #8 seed Doddy Style played eachother just last week when the Shooters got 2 late goals to steal the victory. Would Doddy Style get their revenge this week? Would the famous 'curse of 1st' happen once again in the OFBHL?

Well things didn't look good for the underdogs in the very first shift as Shooter captain Shawn Lemoine was the benefactor of a bad bounce that ended up in the back of the Doddy net. The 1st half would end with the Shooters up 2-1.

With the game tied 3-3 with just 42 ticks showing on the clock, Doddy speedster Greg Patterson scored on a fluky bounce, but that lead didn't last long as spare Sean Malloy scored on a nice wrister through traffic to tie this terrific game at 4-4 with just 14 seconds left.

But just 1:18 into overtime, Doddy playmaker Eric Bekkers made a great pass to the point to his mentor Craig Richer who blasted a shot mashing the mesh through a maze of players....giving the 8th place Doddy Style the huge 5-4 upset win over the 1st place Shooter Club.

11:30 - Dad Jokes 4 No ReGretzkys 2

Big first period leads to Dad Jokes moving on

The #2 seed Dad Jokes scored 6 seconds into the game and went on to dominate the 1st half scoreboard as they held a 4-0 lead over #7 seed No ReGretzkys at the intermission thanks to 2 goals by spare Richard Tattrie, 1g-1a by fireballer Bradley McCarter, and 3 assists by offensive catalyst Kelly Brant.

NRG would make a game of it in the back half of the 2nd half as spare Andrew Stephens scored 2 goals, but backed by sensational goaltending by star masked man Russell Latham, the Jokers would hang on for the 4-2 triumph.

12:20 - Serenity Now! 5 Big Bad Garneau 4

Both teams advance in a thrilling OT finish

Each half of this tight game between #2 seed Serenity Now and #5 seed Big Bad Garneau had each team enjoying a 3-1 advantage on the scoreboard....although just barely for the Serenity gang as freshman Rob Clark sniped the tying 4-4 goal with just 24 seconds showing on the clock.

And just 49 ticks into overtime, league matriarch Cindy Bertrand took a clever point shot that ricocheted off a defender to tickle the twine as Serenity Now escaped with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over the Big Bad bunch.

Playmaker Jason Muscant had 1g-2a for the winners while sharpshooter Jeff Murphy had 2 goals and steady rearguard Jean-François Labelle had 1g-1a in a losing effort.
