You could feel the urgency on the MMS bench off the opening drop, despite the absence of their captain and his family they dominated the opening minutes and were rewarded on a Colin Smith bomb 3 minutes in, Jeff Murphy and Denise Smith would add markers to extend the MMS lead to 3-0 late in the first period. However before the first was done returning bomber Spencer McDonald would finally get himself on track and do what the renowned shooter does best, he would find twine not once, but twice in the last minute of the period to send the game to halftime with the score 3-2.

Unfazed by the momentum shift, MMS would wrest that momentum back onto their side of the floor with another early period goal from Murphy, then add another from Brooke Dodd to extend to 5-2. The Downers would attempt to push back into the game but could not overcome spare tender Justin Labrecque and fall 6-3. DD goaltender Phil Downer put in a yeoman's effort despite the loss turning aside 45 of 50 shots.
