Week 1 - And we're OFF!

Previous Story - Next Story
2024-01-14
The opening week of the Spring 2024 season was a mixed bag of close games plus a few blowouts but all the games were well played and clean with very few penalties despite the rookies getting adjusted to the league... should be another great regular season and the race for the playoffs has officially begun! Too early to call but my way too early prediction has Crematorium taking on The Kids Are All Right in the Bubba Cup final on April 28th...

Here are the recaps from Sunday's matchups:

Time to see a doctor as Oozing Discharge too much for Downer & Dirtier

The Spring 2024 season hit the floor on Sunday and with the games we saw things are already looking like it's going to be another tight season!
The opener had rookie captain Doug Tattrie leading his unfortunately named Oozing Discharge into a battle with veteran skippers Mona Le Blanc and Kelly Brant who decided to get Downer and Dirtier this season! The first period would open slowly with both teams finding their chemistry, but as time wore on it was OD who would take over and loose 27 first period shots on D&D spare tender Mark Legari, they would finally light the lamp with just over 6 to play when Steve "Jeans" Sicotte 🚨🍏 popped one from the slot, Steve forgot his shorts but remembered how to score the first goal of the Spring session. Seconds later returning sniper Gabriel Grimard 🚨🚨 would add to the lead off a feed from his partner Juliane Forget 🚨🍏🍏 to make it 2-0 Discharge at the half.
The Dirty crew would fire away in the second period and get on the board quickly with a pair from feisty Frank Zic 🎩🎩🎩, but another scoring spree from OD would follow with 3 in a row, the last an own goal for D&D as their D attempted a behind the net pass which ended up in the goal to make it 5-2. Zic and returning workhorse Sean Robertson 🚨 would make the final score close with late goals but Juliane Forget salted the game away in the final seconds with an empty netter to make the final 6-4 for Oozing Discharge. In his first game as an O4 captain Doug Tattrie 🚨🍏🍏 managed to tie for the team lead in points and make the right lineup decisions to start the season undefeated.

9:00 - Wizard of Aus 8 Stick Magnets 5

Rookie Richer triumphant in first O4 goalie game

The second game of Week 1 was an awesome one featuring close friends on both ends of the rink as Richer's Wizard of Aus took on rookie captain Patrick Gaudreau's Stick Magnets. This game featured the ball hockey goaltending debut of young Aly Richer, an accomplished ice hockey goalie who had never previously transitioned to ball hockey there was some nervousness from her parents as she took over the crease, but the fresh faced tender didn't show much (outward) nervousness onthe floor in this game!
The opening minutes of the game would be very evenly played with great scoring changes at either end that were denied by Richer and SM tendy Ben Conrad. Approximately halfway through the period sophomore Sam Parsonson 🚨🍏 would submit a bid for "Goal of the Year" early in the campaign as he deftly deked through a ton of traffic and scored with a beauty fnish to give the Magnets a 1-0 lead. Second later they would extend their lead on a Jeff Murphy 🎩🎩🎩 bomb that caught the corner to make it 2-0. SM had multiple chances to extend the lead following that goal but were turned aside by some very solid Richer stops, her team would reward her late in the period with a pair of goals to tie the game on snipes by JP Donnelly 🚨🚨🍏🍏🍏 and Austin Perron 🎩🎩🎩🍏 and that's how the first period would finish with the score locked at 2-2.
The 2nd frame would be back and forth with the teams exchanging goals in the first 10 minutes to make it 4-4, With half a period to play WoA would step up to put a stranglehold on the game, Mylene Frechette 🚨🍏 started the scoring spree and instead of that goal again being matched by SM it was Perron and then Rene de Montigny 🚨🍏 extending the Wizards lead to 7-4 with just 2:01 left to play. Christine Morris 🚨🍏🍏 would add some excitement with a late blast top shelf through traffic but it wasn't enough as WoA add an ENG and walk away with an 8-5 victory. Congrats to Aly Richer on her first career O4 goalie win, she was full value for the victory stopping 40 of 45 shots and adding an assist to an impressive stat line.

9:50 - Brentman & Robin 5 Girls & Boys Club 1

Ladies lead the way for Brentman & Robin

Game 3 featured another rookie between the pipes as noted sniper Bradley McCarter has decided to trade in his scoring prowess for goalie gear this season, Brad is tending the twine for Girls & Boys Club this season as they faced off versus a veteran laden Brentman and Robin squad.
The game would open with a quick goal from GBC off the stick of spare Sean Frewen 🚨 but before the period was done the B&R ladies would take over this game with Danielle Leroux 🎩🎩🎩 and Robin Pitman 🚨🚨 lighting the lamp once apiece for a 2-1 lead,
The second period would continue to be dominated by the players without a Y chromosome, first Robin would extend the lead to 3-1 with her 2nd of the game, and finally Danielle would finish things off with a pair in the waning moments to cap her hat trick performance and make the final 5-1 for the superhero squad. Brent Ferguson was perfect on 26 shots against apart from the very early goal while McCarter had an exceptional showing of his own despite the 5 goals against as he was the much busier keeper facing 53 shots on goal.

10:40 - The Kids Are All Right 4 Mike Babcocks 0

Return of the O4 Goalie GOAT

The "hump game" of Week 1 featured a The Kids Are All Right taking on spare laden Mike Babcocks squad without their co-captains Richard Tattrie and Renee Emby who decided to skip out on the first week to get engaged... CONGRATULATIONS ya crazy kids! The Babcocks were in tough taking on a very strong TKAAR team and the return of the O4's all time leader in GAA and Save Percentage Stephane Portelance.
Kids' Captain Jason Muscant 🚨🚨 coming off a 3 goal regular season last session would almost match that number with a pair of snipes in the first period alone to stake his team to a 3-0 lead at the break. The second period would see more of the same but even less scoring as Pat Gaudreau and Portelance were almost perfect in the frame stopping 37 of 38 shots on goal, the one marker would come off another Muscant's stick as Corey 🚨 would extend the lead to 4-0 which was more than enough for Portelance to make a triumphant O4 return. The stellar tender starts his 5th O4 season in style with a 4-0 shutout victory as TKAAR stake their claim as the early favourite this season.

11:30 - Rad Aortas 7 Snap, Crackle, Pop! 1

Squires is "Rad" in O4 return

The 11:30 game like the previous one had another goaltender returning from some O4 time off as Jeff Squires came back tending the twine for the Rad Aortas facing down Snap, Crackle, Pop! who featured young Mason Frewen exiting the crease and making his player debut in the league.
The game would open with spare Kortnie Legari 🚨🍏🍏 getting RA on the board but that goal was quickly answered by SCP spare Andrew Stephens 🚨 off an assist from the younger Frewen for his first O4 point as a player and the game was tied 1-1. After that the goaltenders would take over as Squires and spare Russ Latham were stellar, very late in the first RA would grab a lead thanks to Alex Rogozynski 🚨🚨 finishing on a scrambly play to send this game to halftime with RA up 2-1.
The second period would follow a very similar story with the goalies dominating, finally over halfway through the period it was Alim Dhanani 🚨🍏🍏🍏🍏 potting a huge insurance goal, then on the next shift the man known as Rogo would add his 2nd of the game to make it 4-1. With the way Squires was playing that was more than enough cushion as he also would make a triumphant return to the league stopping 28 of 29 shots in victory. The game would end with a lopsided score thanks to a trio of goals for Dave Allston 🎩🎩🎩🍏🍏 all coming in the final 83 seconds of play.

12:20 - Jumpin Jacks 4 Sarcastic Monkeys 2.0 4

Jumpin Jack's Flash to comeback Tie

The second last game was a partial matchup of last week's 2023 semifinal as Kaptain Kortnie Legari and her Sarcastic Monkeys 2.0 took on Brock and Faith Murray's Jumpin Jacks, the game featured the same captains and 9 of the players who'd faced off just last week in a game won by Hocus Pocus on their way to a Bubba championship, but that was last year so let's see how this season would open!
Things opened pretty well for SM2 this time around, gifted with an early PP opportunity they would strike quickly with Tania Drouin 🚨one timing home an absolute beauty cross court backdoor feed from Dan Blondeau 🍏🍏. Very late in the period it would become the Michel Blondeau show as the renowned magician with the ball would weave through nearly the entire JJ team before depositing the ball in the back of the cage for a 2-0 lead.
Early in the second stanza rookie Melanie Lalonde 🚨🍏 was "Jenny on the spot" at the side of the net for her first O4 goal to extend the SM2 lead to 3-0, but soon after JJ would get on the board and unsurprisingly it was captain Brock Murray 🚨🍏🍏 taking matters into his own hands burying a great feed from Sara Bruce 🚨🍏🍏. With less than half a period left Michel would pot another one to make it 4-1 but JJ weren't quite done yet, after battling with the high stick rule early on JJ rookie Christopher Veilleux 🚨🚨 looked more and more comfortable as the game progressed and showed late that his shot will be an issue for goaltenders this season. Veilleux would bring the SM2 lead to 2 goals with 5 minutes remaining on a snipe from the slot then score another later through a crowd to make it 4-3 with 2:33 remaining. With just over a minute to play the Jacks would complete the comeback as unsung Sara Bruce capped a very strong showing with a blast through traffic to even the game at 4-4. Despite a couple of late shots on goal that's how this game would end as both teams escape with a point in a very entertaining match.

1:10 - Crematorium 7 Kennedy's Krew 0

Squires and Bolzon serve notice they'll be a force for red-hot Crematorium

The last game of a great opening week of action unfortunately turned out to be the least exciting matchup of the day, coming in most were expecting a tight affair between Shawn Weatherdon's Kennedy's Krew and Devin McManus' Crematorium but one of the goalies and a rookie Original had other plans.
Very early in the opening frame and freshman Rachel Bolzon 🎩🎩🎩🍏 would show what she's capable of, Rookie Rachel would team up with Tim Squires 🚨🚨🍏🍏 on a sweet give and go playto send Crematorium off and running. In fact the pair would dominate the first period accounting for 4 of their team's 6 goals, at the other end Collin Jackson was ON in goal to start the season as he stopped all 13 shots in the frame to put the game on the verge of a mercy with Crematorium up 6-0.
KK would push back in the 2nd outshooting their opponent 19-11 in the period but just could not buy a break to beat the hot goalie on this day, Jackson would end up with the 2nd shutout recorded on the day, his first in the O4 as Crematorium complete the mercy with just 22 seconds remaining to win 7-0 starting the season in style!
